Rev. Peter Scott, Rector of St. Mark’s Church Orangeville in Canada and Beryl Saayman invited friends to a Giving Circle on Wednesday 17 May.
Gail Jacobs, CEO of the West Coast Community Foundation in South Africa, shared stories of how the Foundation supports philanthropic activities of youth and community members in remote towns along the West Coast region. Jacobs told them of the youth in Nuwerus, who in December 2016 had purchased ceiling boards and a toilet for the local crèche to apply for a subsidy from the Department of Social Development. The crèche is housed in three containers mounted on bricks behind the Dutch Reformed Church. It took the youth two years to raise funds selling ‘vetkoek’ (a South African bun) filled with curry and coffee and they were given a grant of R10 000,00.
Jacobs expressed appreciation at the donation of $470 Canadian Dollars which will be allocated as Grants for education. The evening was concluded with prepared platters by Saayman (Jacobs’ sister) of South African treats that included milk tart, koeksisters and dried fruit.
